What is visceral fat?
Originally, visceral fat is a collection of adipose tissue in the abdominal cavity, or simply put, fat stored deeper than normal belly fat. It envelops major organs such as the liver, pancreas, and kidneys. Nasty Stuff. Most of us know that having excess body fat is not healthy. However, certain types of fat, especially too much fat, can be even more harmful than we realize.
Visceral fat that accumulates around organs can contribute to many dangerous health conditions, including heart disease, dementia, and cancer.
How to diagnose visceral fat?
- A CT or MRI scan is the only way to accurately and reliably diagnose visceral fat if there is too much fat. There is none.
- GPs can use common measurements and guidelines to estimate visceral fat levels and potential health risks. You can also purchase a bioimpedance scale to measure visceral fat. When you step on a sensor that measures the resistance of body fat, a small electrical current flows through your body. These come in a variety of prices, but we can only provide an estimate of your body fat percentage.
