What is Thyroid examination?

Health professionals use thyroid tests to see how well the thyroid gland is working and to find the cause of problems such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Because it controls how energy is used, it affects almost every organ of the body and even the heart. A thyroid test can help health care professionals diagnose thyroid disorders such as:

  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Graves’ disease
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Hashimoto’s disease
  • Thyroid Nodules and Thyroid Cancer

What blood tests do doctors use to check thyroid function?

The doctor may order him one or more blood tests to check thyroid function. Testing may include thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), T4, T3, and thyroid antibody tests.

TSH test: A health care practitioner will usually check the amount of TSH in her blood first.

T4 test: High blood levels of T4 may indicate hyperthyroidism.

T3 test: If her T4 levels are normal but her doctor determines she has hyperthyroidism, she may have a T3 test to confirm the diagnosis.

Thyroid antibody test: Measuring thyroid antibodies can help diagnose autoimmune thyroid diseases.
