What is male breast reduction?

Male breast reduction, also known as gynecomastia, is the overdevelopment of breasts due to genetic traits or immature hormones. It is the most effective known treatment for breast enlargement in men. At the AIG Clinics, plastic surgery specialists carefully examine the case and remove the oversized breasts by removing the excess breast tissue and fat.

What are the Benefits?

  • More confidence and self-esteem
  • A more masculine, toned figure
  • Posture improvement
  • Improving physical performance
  • A wider selection of clothing

How does male breast reduction surgery work?

At the AIG Clinics, plastic Doctors use general anesthesia for breast reduction surgery on men. The surgery often takes about 3 hours, depending on the size of the breast. First, the Doctor makes a small incision around the areola and other areas of the breast to begin liposuction. Some of the glandular tissue is removed by cannulating her tube. The breast is then reshaped and the results are visible immediately after the Doctor closes the incision.

  • Gynecomastia surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic
  • The surgery takes about 60 to 90 minutes
  • Patients stay in hospital for one night
  • If you work is not physical, expect to return to work after one to two weeks
  • Expect to be back to normal physical exercise within six to eight weeks

As with most surgical procedures, there are many options, depending upon the patient’s wishes, technical considerations and surgeon preferences. At your consultation, your surgeon will advise upon the best option for you.

In the large majority of patients there is little or no excess redundant skin over the breast and all that is required is liposuction.

On the other hand, in the case of glandular gynecomastia, it is possible to remove the gland through an incision placed around the lower half of the areola.

However, in certain circumstances, an incision as used for breast uplift in women will have to be used. This involves incisions placed away from the areola.

  • Sleep straight.

  • Wear loose clothing.

  • Eat healthy and drink plenty of water.

  • The patient can return to their desk job after 2-3 days of surgery.

  • Strenuous activities should be avoided for about 3-6 weeks after surgery to allow tissue tightening.

  • Wear support garment and vests under normal clothes to support the area after surgery.

  • Do not take hot bath or sauna bath for a few weeks after surgery.

  • Take pain medications and antibiotics as prescribed.

Your recovery time, amount of bruising, and swelling will depend on numerous factors such as what strategies were employed for your surgery, your health, your age, and if any other procedures were performed.

You may be able to return to work in about a week, or even less, depending on the extent of your procedure(s) and the physical demands of your job.

Walking is permitted but your surgeon will instruct you to refrain from all strenuous activities, especially during the first weeks of your recovery.

Your deep sutures will dissolve over 2-6 months to support your incisions during the most-critical stages of wound healing and collagen remodeling; any external sutures you see will be removed within two weeks. For the next several months, the connective tissue in your skin will keep contracting (using the beneficial effects of scars contracting over time–scars can be on the inside where you can’t see them, too!) and adjusting to the removal of fat and tissue that has taken place.

Final results should show in 1-6 months (depending on which surgical technique was used) and can be long-lasting through a consistent program of a balanced diet and appropriate exercise.
