What is Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Lymphatic drainage massage, also called manual lymphatic drainage, is a gentle massage to relieve painful swelling in the arms and legs caused by lymphedema. Lymphedema commonly affects people who have recovered from breast cancer surgery. Lymphedema occurs when tissues retain fluid after the cardiovascular system pumps blood to the tissues and organs.

The remaining fluid is called lymph. Normally, the lymphatic system collects lymph and carries it back to the heart through a network of lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes. When something disrupts the lymphatic system's processes, it causes lymph to build up in the arms and legs, causing swelling.

Massage therapists use lymphatic drainage massage techniques to move lymph fluid from tissues to lymph nodes and reduce tissue swelling.

How to perform a lymphatic massage

Trained professionals provide lymphatic massage. Most of these exercises can be done standing, sitting, or lying down as long as you are comfortable.

Here are some tips for lymphatic massage:

  • These massage movements should only target the skin, so use gentle pressure so as not to press hard enough to feel the muscles.
  • Relax your hands. Do not massage swollen or infected areas.
  • Do not massage areas that have undergone cancer treatment.
  • Drink additional fluids, ideally 2-4 glasses of water, after each massage to flush the body.
  • There should be no pain or redness of the skin during the massage.
  • Do not use lotions or other products, use only your hands.
