What is stress?
Stress is a normal human reaction that happens to everyone. The human body is designed to experience and respond to stress. When you experience change or challenges (stressors), your body triggers physical and mental reactions. That's stress. The stress response helps the body adapt to new situations. Stress is positive; it keeps us alert, motivated, and ready to avoid danger. For example, when an important test is approaching, the stress response can help the body work harder and stay awake longer. It becomes a problem.
What Happens to the Body When Stressed?
The body's autonomic nervous system controls heart rate, breathing, vision, and more. Its built-in stress response, the “fight or flight response,” helps the body cope with stressful situations
Symptoms of physical stress include:
Discomfort and pain. A feeling of pain in the chest or a pounding heart.
- Fatigue or sleep disturbance;
- Headache, dizziness, or tremors;
- Hypertension.
- Tight or clenched jaw muscles. Stomach or digestive problems.
- Weak immune system.
